Tips
for Authors and Illustrators
When
writing something new, or sending something you’ve written or illustrated
to publishers, it’s always a good idea to take a look at what’s in
the shops and libraries first.
Try to read or look at as many books a publisher has published before
sending in your material,
to get a feel for their list and whether your manuscript, idea or
style of illustration is likely to fit.
Try reading
or showing your work to as many children, or people who know children
well, as possible, to get feedback and see whether your work appeals
to them and is aimed at the right audience.
For
Authors:
Before
sending in work give yourself a couple of weeks without looking at
it then take a look with a fresh eye. What makes the work special?
Is it a fresh, new and exciting style or idea? Does it
bring a new perspective to a common theme or concept? Are the
characters convincing and three-dimensional, with an appealing voice
and personality? Is there a plot that carries the reader through,
making them turn the pages right to the last page? Does the
narrative flow easily, with a smooth rhythm that is easy to read aloud?
(Reading your work aloud is a great way of seeing if a manuscript
works, and for spotting clumsy narrative writing, lack of pace, or
dialogue that isn’t realistic.)
For
Illustrators:
Before
sending in your illustration samples, think about what makes your
work stand out. Is it a fresh, new style? If it’s a character, is
it full of life and energy or charisma? Do your style and characterisation
have the potential to carry through a whole picture book? Is there
any movement, emotion or humour in your artwork? Is the style aimed
at children? Is it suitable for the Little Tiger list? Take time to
analyse your work. It’s much harder to illustrate a children’s book
than most people think and the competition is very high.
